The newspaper industry, a time-honored tradition for over a century, has long been a staple of our morning routines. But beyond the familiar pages, it’s a fast-paced, finely tuned machine of writing, design, and relentless drive that most people never see or think about in our instant-gratification world. As consumers in the digital age, we devour news and content at lightning speed, rarely pausing to consider the intricate work that goes into creating the content we consume so quickly.

I had the privilege of working at one such place: the Times Community Newspapers. From my early days as a Pre-Pressman at a printing facility in Xenia to my role as a Graphic Designer and in-house Webmaster, I gained an inside look at the heartbeat of multiple weekly newspapers that served their communities. Witnessing firsthand how stories, advertisements, and graphics came together—and how the entire process unfolded from production to delivery—was nothing short of extraordinary. Below are just a few examples of the work I contributed during my time there.

The GMVN Auto Showcase was a relatively new section that was to be featured in over 40 newspapers across Brown Publishing's newspapers once every month. I had the honor of creating the header and several marketing graphics to go along with it. Click on the header to the left to see several other things that we designed.
The Stop and Shop was a Bi-Monthly publication of small ads for local goods and services. It was very comparable to a full publication classifieds section of any newspaper but ran thousands of ads at once. Click Here to see just a small sample of the ads that I had the pleasure of creating for this popular publication.
Creating advertisements for the newspapers was but one of many hats I wore while at TCN, but it was also one of my favorite as I was constantly able to flex my creative muscle in small bursts. It gave me the opportunity to help small businesses get recognized whether it was in but color on a 1/4 page ad, or in black and white for a 2" x 2" ad, those were the best challenges.
